Driving and vehicle permits
You can apply for the following permits or permissions through the City of Cape Town:
Professional driving permit
If you provide a public transport service or drive a certain kind of vehicle, you will need to acquire a professional driving permit (PDP). These vehicles typically includes buses and minibus taxis; goods vehicles weighing more than 3 500kg ; vehicles carrying dangerous/flammable material; and all breakdown vehicles.
Motor trade number
A motor trade number allows registered dealerships to operate an unlicensed vehicle on a public road in the course of their business.
Special or temporary permit
A special vehicle permit allows you to drive an unlicensed vehicle on a public road for a specific purpose, for example: repairs, police clearance and roadworthy tests.
